Religions

All our races have their own religions:

  • The Empire’s pantheon of gods should be instantly recognizable. They take their religion seriously even as many recognize that their deities are rather capricious. Many are fatalists with Marcus believing the three Fates are taking great pleasure in playing games with his life. The resemblance of the Anemoi to Furies does not help our winged female’s reputation in the Empire. As the Huns regard the Anemoi as abominations and the Celts call them Winged Demons being related to the avenging agents of Jupiter, is probably the best the Anemoi can hope for. In their exclamations (profanity) the imperials usually invoke one of their gods. These are people from the ancient world – not our modern one.
  • The Celts have their own pantheon of gods although only one, Epona, is ever referenced in the novel. As Druids practice human sacrifice, the Celts are obviously serious about their religion.
  • Dwarves talk of the afterlife as joining their loved ones in the Halls of their Ancestors. Hollywood keeps portraying Dwarves as Scottish – this is just one of my attempts to restore them to their rightful Nordic roots (ignore that I placed their homeland in Europe’s far east).
  • The Anomie appeal to the Winds (just not the cruel East Wind) for aid.  Each wind is given its own personality and power. The Anomie also name their daughters after winds.
  • The Huns religion is described as harsh and unforgiving. It requires them to honor people who fought well – even their enemies, killed at night imperils their souls as does killing certain animals. Their adversaries exploit the last two beliefs. Krekka thinks it is all just ignorant superstition.
