The Dispossessed
The three other peoples inhabiting the world have much looser structure. This could solely be due to them being decimated by their enemies in the not-too-distant past – there just isn’t enough of them to maintain class structure.
- The Magyars have a Chieftain and a Wise One leading each remaining tribe. The Chieftain appears to be selected based on competence and the tribe’s Wise One is a Mage that has spent decades travelling the world gaining knowledge. The Magyars also appear more egalitarian than most (or at least more pragmatic given their current circumstances). Helene is guarding the flock with her brother, they defer to their female Wise One, and they make use of female scouts who are expected to be able to defend themselves. Marriage appears to be by mutual consent (a bit of an issue for Elias).
- At present the Dwarves appear to have no formal leadership although they do defer to people with experience. As Marcus observes that the Dwarves fight much like Legionnaires, we can assume that female Dwarves are not warriors. Finnr and Asa marriage is a love match and so likely the norm among the Dwarves.
- The Anemoi appear the most egalitarian of the societies. They are also the most depleted and therefore that might not have been the case before their city was destroyed. They elect a leader and according to Mistral regard marriage as a horror. Being all female there is no need to describe the power dynamics between the sexes.
